[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I did it for you
Turtle: alright what’s this about
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: “I feel like I should pull you and turtle into one chat room”
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: – Lucas, 2015
Turtle: cool, so i can blame lucas
Turtle: as always
Lucas: well that works
Lucas: anyway, I was going to ask you guys to ask me some questions about the setting I’m working on
Lucas: it’ll help me know what you’re interested in and what I should be thinking about
Turtle: you mean Delicos?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Anyway, I was discussing with him which ability would be a better choice for next week. I mean, the techs are a given and aren’t a hard choice, but I can’t decide between free self-healing or walling off foes. (…or that, I guess, heehee)
Lucas: yeah, Delicos
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Anyway, lucas, what kind of world are you going for? Since I don’t think we’ve gone over it much
Turtle: His is mostly a typical region, I believe.
Lucas: my interpretation of a typical region from the video games, yeah
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Okay, I see. Do you want it to be more railroaded like Unova was, or a little more open ended in terms of layout(like Johto or Hoenn)?
Turtle: well, you’ve seen the map
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I have?
Turtle: you’ve had the opportunity
Lucas: ooh, we should peer pressure him into making a roll20 account
Turtle: you’ve been in the roll20 page right?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I have not. I’ve been busy. Like even right now I’m trying to work on a ton of assignments for chem, but I’m not going to get too far >_<
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Not tonight, anyway
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: One of the big issues is that I can’t understand shit from the textbook because my professor DOESN’T EXPLAIN IT! He just does examples!
Lucas: ah yes, the joy of chem class
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Mmmmhmmm
Lucas: anyway, that’s exactly the kind of question I was hoping to be asked, because it never occurred to me
Lucas: never would have, either
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: And your region design in turn affects how you want the players to approach it: Do you want it to be a somewhat fixed plot or do you want to be able to let the players have a bit more say in what happens? Though keep in mind the latter requires more improv.
Turtle: since the map doesn’t seem to be up right now on the roll20 page
Turtle: can you post it?
Lucas: it’s the main screen if you actually enter the game
Turtle: i did enter the game
Lucas: it doesn’t say you’re in there
Turtle: i popped in; popped out
Lucas: anyway, give me a moment to update the picture I have on dropbox
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Finally, I found /an/ example. So I’m basically copying existing work rather than learning a general method.
Lucas: yay science education!
Lucas: or “magic education” if you’re in turtle’s game
Turtle: chemistry, alchemy…
Turtle: same thing
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: what is turtle’s game
Turtle: the one where you two and rebel are about to die
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So nothing has changed.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Okay, so the red nodes are obviously gym cities.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I do like the idea of a water city, the only one that came close was Humilau and even then that doesn’t count. …I forgot Pacifidlog existed, sorry!
Turtle: i just got the naming pattern and lucas i am going to strangle you
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Now you know how I feel.
Turtle: just let it go, tl
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: To be fair I’d rather that than ironic names
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Also, turt I am going to strangle you while you strangle lucas.
Lucas: I literally told you I was going to use this pattern if I made a PTU game
Turtle: i know and i forgot
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Anyway, a game-like region has some obligatory “evil team”. What were you planning on going with for that?
Lucas: Team Physics
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Where every one is based off of the numerous psychic PC classes?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: grr, why isn’t delta on the list of default symbols
Turtle: triangles are weird, is why
Lucas: as in, the plural of “physic,” the synonym for medicine
Turtle: so they can heal each other at a range of MAG/2, got it
Lucas: they’re mad biologists studying pokemon and doing things like creating type-shifted teddiursas
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So like that one thing from the tcg.
Turtle: (sadly i don’t think anyone here plays enough FE to get the joke)
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I got it, and I want to strangle you more
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (I still suck at FE, by the way)
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Oh god dammit adobe.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ………
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: really
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: the .pdf for my homework froze but the .pdf for PTU didn’t
Lucas: even your computer would rather play RPGs
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: no kidding
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Trust me, I’d much rather be playing right now
Lucas: anyway, yes, the big dark blue area to the west is the ocean, the brown scribbles are mountainous areas, the dark green scribbles are forests
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Anyway, so interesting design choice. Next question: Are they evil? I mean, they’re going to oppose the player, but they don’t necessarily have to be evil. Maybe they’re well-intentioned extremists.
Lucas: the weird blue green scribbles are grass/farmland
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: If so, is there someone near the top who’s not entirely evil that the players can relate to?
Lucas: they certainly don’t see themselves as evil, but people in the region know that pokemon aren’t like other life and that messing with them is likely to cause horrible things to happen and don’t appreciate rampant experimentation on them
Turtle: in other words, is there an n
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Kind of, yes.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So they’re Plague Knight
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: “For Science!” and all that rot
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: speaking of plague knight, I’m almost done with the challenge stages, working on kickstarter bosses right now
Lucas: basically yes, all for science
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Right, fair enough. So is there someone near the top who questions the morality of this? There doesn’t have to be, it all depends on the mood you want to set for your game
Turtle: that’s a question
Lucas: similarly to turtle’s game, where pokemon are apparently tiny, adorable demons, in this one they’re created creatures that have kind of maybe achieved some ecological balance with less magical earth life
Turtle: is this a light-hearted romp with ten year olds and cackling monologuing villains
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So again, similar to the actual games.
Turtle: or are there shades of grey here
Turtle: (and are there 50 of them)
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: That’s kinda what I’m going for, turt.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Also, I’m going to strangle you more.
Lucas: of course, by “ecological balance” I mean they’ve replaced most non-human Earth life….
Lucas: light-hearted romp, I think
Turtle: they were unfit for survival
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Okay, that leads into something else: Average age of the PCs?
Lucas: I might throw in a few things that I feel are light-hearted, but the players don’t
Lucas: that has been known to happen
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Just like, in general what were you thinking.
Lucas: probably mid-to-late teens
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So the usual then for us.
Lucas: little kids still don’t get to wander on their own too much
Turtle: remind me, how old did i make whats-his-face
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: 16 or so
Turtle: like, 15? 16?
Turtle: not his face
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: then again I think we ended up with something along the lines of 12-13-14-15-16-17-who the hell knows
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: …never mind
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I didn’t read
Turtle: i knew it was one of those
Turtle: so yeah
Lucas: Henry’s 19, but he’s probably a little old for just starting out
Turtle: we know you didn’t
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I may have killed chat
Turtle: well, while we’re here
Turtle: i should ask
Lucas: you should
Turtle: did you guys like the trial i had?
Lucas: yeah, that was fun
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: It was…interesting
Turtle: interesting, you say?
Lucas: not saying every fight should be that complex, but that definitely a nice fight for a milestone
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ^
Turtle: see, a certain phrase comes to mind when you say ‘interesting’
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Don’t fucking dare.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: …-sigh- Go ahead, I guess I owe you that much
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: …oh. Well, I can’t argue with that.
Lucas: now I’m curious what you were expecting, TL
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: A lot of things.
Lucas: anyway, there probably won’t be a particularly sympathetic character like N in the team, if only because I didn’t like N
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Alright, fair.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Next: Salton in particular. Do you expect the PCs to have Surf by the time it’s time to go there or will there be a ferry service? If so, will it be from Ambrosia, Sandy, or both?
Lucas: there’ll definitely be a ferry service
Turtle: you can “surf” with any pokemon that can both swim and has a mountable capability
Turtle: regardless of if they know the move
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (Apologies if I sound redundant or pointless, the point is to make you think about what you’re planning)
Turtle: Same for Fly.
Lucas: I assume Fly is… yeah
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I mean, I know that, but maybe you expect the player to have it by then. I don
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: *don’t know. This is your story, not mine.
Lucas: there’s also the wrinkle that turtle’s story is starting from Palate Town and likely won’t be going to Salton for a while, but Henry and the Teddiursa are starting from Ambrosia, at the foot of the E4, and working backwards of what the path would be in a video game
Turtle entered chat.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Well, if you want I could pair with turt, make things easier
Turtle: nooooooooooo i don’t want any friends
Lucas: well there you go
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: welp, and I don’t even know when I’ll be able to start. Maybe wednesday, I don’t know. Or tuesday night
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: also turt, I’ve noticed you don’t want friends
Lucas: to be fair, while it might be type-shifted to psychic to justify it talking with humans, the teddiursa (TL, if you’re going to play it you should name it) is still a pokemon
Lucas: so he could be less “friend” and more “servant”
Turtle: oh right, that
Turtle: i suppose that can work
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: That is true, I wanted to experiment with that
Turtle: names that aren’t allowed: nexus
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Well duh.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Nexus is a victini, it makes no sense for a teddiursa.
Lucas: they look pretty much the same
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: But in terms of abilities they’re completely different. (Turt, lucas knows what’s going on with nexus, right?)
Lucas: no clue
Lucas: injokes ahoy!
Turtle: in another game we’re in, TL has a Victini who is, in terms of roleplaying, basically a second character for him
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ^. I’ve gotten kind of attached to it.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (and then I got a third. It’s kind of difficult to play 3 PCs at once, but I dug myself into that hole…)
Turtle: best not to ask
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ..
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Ask what?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Why I thought it was a good idea? Nexus just kind of happened without thinking, and the 3rd PC was RB’s idea. I wasn’t going to involve him at all. /Then/ rebel decided to make what happened plot relevant.
Lucas: the dastard!
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: And that 3rd PC in general is why I was so adamantly opposed to playing an elec-elementalist in our game.
Lucas: ah yes, I remember that being mentioned
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So yeah. Because that’s basically what that 3rd PC /is/.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: …well, kind of.
Turtle: i dunno
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Elec affinity, but varied moveset
Turtle: he’s been more of an ice elementalist
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Ice Beam is fun.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Blame RB for that one.
Lucas: as for when we play, well, this will likely only be on Saturdays and/or Sundays, when one of my games on those days doesn’t work
Lucas: like if Rebel can’t make it to a game, or something
Lucas: I just don’t have time to play on weekdays =(
Turtle: …I don’t think Rebel’s ever had a missed game.
Turtle: Did he ever miss a day in Apprentice?
Lucas: me either
Turtle: I mean, I know he was late more often than not because of church.
Lucas: yeah, I think he always got to at least part of every game
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ^
Lucas: so what’s this you’re saying about someone with elec affinity using ice attacks?
Turtle: long story
Turtle: because we’d have to start at the beginning
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I’ll try to tell the abridged version.
Turtle: grab popcorn
Turtle: both for length and for the spectacle
Lucas: honestly, I’m more curious about how it works mechanically than the story
Lucas: since I’ve been looking at trainer combat and trying to figure out how to mix types like that
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Bear in mind, we’re not using PTU/PTA
Turtle: It’s not a PTU-based game.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: This is a homebrew system, much more heavily based off of the games
Turtle: this was long before we discovered such a thing existed
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Basically, all I’m going to say is randomized TMs and him happening to be compatible with Ice Beam.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Which carried over to this.
Turtle: you mean, you got me to take the damage calculations straight out of the video games and plug them into an excel spreadsheet
Turtle: well, google doc
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Well, that’s what we did way back when, though I think RB was the one doing it
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Jesus, that was a long time ago.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: The only real differences from the game are traits similar to…was it rumble? I can’t even remember.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: And that’s as a replacement for EVs, because we have to draw the line somewhere.
Lucas: oh god, a tRPG with EVs
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: And that’s way more information than you ever wanted to know.
Lucas: the very thought is horrifying
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (We implemented IVs though!)
Turtle: i’m just amused at how that started, what, four years ago? and we’re not even halfway through.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: To be fair
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: half of that was me
Turtle: yes, two of those years is directly your fault for spontaneously dying.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Sure is.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: I think the worst part of this
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Is that we can only really play on saturdays
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: and that’s the same day we usually do the other one
Turtle: there is also that
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: But the only one that’s missing out is RB and he enjoys RaikouRider’s game more anyway
Lucas: I’m also down to play on Sundays if that game is off for a week
Turtle: That’s if we even continue Ryzen after this.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Why, what happened?
Turtle: system and plot don’t mix
Lucas: yeah, and we’re headed into the last planned adventure
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Oh, okay.
Turtle: and also “one session a month” is a little demoralizing for the gm, i think
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Well, true.
Lucas: a lot is, though
Lucas: Chris has a couple ideas for other games to play in Savage Worlds when Ryzen is over, though
Lucas: I just looked up what Cleanse Tags do
Lucas: I hope Milos starts making tons of them if we ever run into any Ghosts (besides him)
Turtle: I’ve told him about it
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: What do they do?
Lucas: lots of stuff
Turtle: You can tape them to your fist to punch a ghost
Turtle: I’m not making this up
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So it confers Scrappy.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: can’t you sing the tune to “Ghostbusters” to get the same result?
Turtle: with a high enough perform check maybe
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: but wait
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Ghostbusters isn’t around
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: shit
Lucas: prevent ghosts from phasing through walls, let you punch ghosts, burn them to get rid of Cursed, Suppressed, or Disabled, reveal Invisible enemies
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: They sound useful.
Lucas: if you see a ghost, yes!
Lucas: and you can make them for free with the right edge
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Fun.
Turtle: or maybe
Turtle: you guys could start training occult
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: too busy training other things
Lucas: way too busy
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: and keep in mind both me and lucas have that in 1
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: *at 1
Turtle: I’m perfectly aware of that.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Kirby needs to train his eyes
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: see EVERYTHING
Turtle: And how Rebel has it at Adept rank
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: especially into people’s souls
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (which he can somewhat do thanks to intuition!)
Lucas: hmmm… would you say the Martial Artist class feat counts as a Martial Artist Feature?
Turtle: all [Class] features count as a feature of that class
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: ?
Lucas: cool, getting a stat point for it, then
Turtle: (The [Class] feature is the feature you take to take the class itself. Some features will have a prerequisite of X features in a given class.)
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Right.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: (Lucas, what does that do?)
Lucas: what, that Martial Artist counts as a Martial Artist feat?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: No, the martial artist thing in general
Lucas: oh, it’s a straight combat class
Lucas: Fighting-type moves
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Neat.
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: and now, for the worst idea of the century: Replaying Zero 2. Maybe I’ll land Active earlier this time now that I know how to get it.
Lucas: alright, so I made a character focused purely on trainer combat, no pokemon at all
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: o_o Oh?
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: Interesting.
Lucas: starting off with Twisted Power and Technician is kind of nasty!
Lucas: on the other hand, she’ll increase in power much slower than a normal character
Lucas: I’m thinking of switching her Guile and Stealth, then switching out Sneak’s Tricks (Astonish) for Dynamism (initiative bonus, because she’ll be fragile as hell)
Lucas: Astonish is pretty weak even with Technician and Twisted Power, but mmmmm, dat flinch status
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: paraflinch, yay
Lucas: oh well, she’s adventuring with Henry and the the entire point of my solitaire game is messing with the system
Lucas: I can always retcon her if I want to change things
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: true.
Turtle: fragility means nothing as long as you can kill everything first
Turtle: i mean, she can do what, 25..39 damage with feint attack?
Turtle: Not many things have the HP total to tank that at level 5!
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: So true Glass Cannon mode.
Turtle: no, no, glass cannon would be
Turtle: putting all ten stat points into attack
Lucas: sadly, you can’t do that
Turtle: humans don’t have base relation
Lucas: you can’t put more than five points into any stat at character creation
Turtle: 5 attack, 5 special attack
Lucas: you’re right, why am I even putting points in HP?
Turtle: because you’re a square
Turtle: i mean, you’ll still start with…what, 42 HP?
Lucas: man, armor is expensive
Turtle: just buy a bunch of potions
Turtle: you’ve got five thousand money and no pokeballs to get
Lucas: Dark Vision Goggles, Stealth Clothes, and ten potions
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: yaaay
Lucas: bye turtle
[KMod] TheLinkToThePast: hi turtle
Turtle entered chat.
Lucas: hi turtle
Lucas: I figured you just went to bed without saying anything, or something
Turtle: nah; i’m home, is all
Turtle: which means my internet is of a well-documented quality
Lucas: man, I totally had something I was going to look up before turtle came back and distracted me
Turtle: i’m sorry
Lucas: oh right, I was going to check road conditions on the CHP site
Lucas: I know this snow isn’t enough to close the road to work, but I can dream, dammit
Lucas: oh, since I told turtle, I should tell TL too
Lucas: basically, for story reasons, trainers can’t take the elementalist classes in Game of Throhs in Delicos, which I’m extending to Aura Guardians and probably at least one of the psychic classes
Lucas: there are a small handful of Elementalists, but none of them train pokemon (thus my experiment in making a pokemon-less PC)
Lucas: and unless you actually see them using ridiculous pokemon-like powers, you won’t know they’re Elementalists
